It doesn’t get much flatter than this. On day 7 we separate from the vehicles completely to use the full-blown cycling infrastructure. The route passes through Nijmegen over a dedicated cycle bridge as soon as we re-enter the Netherlands, and then joins the canals and the Danube for mile after mile after mile of utterly flat, wide, traffic-free asphalt roads. Picnic breaks and lunches on the riverside will be the order of the day, with the town of Culemborg just a couple of minutes’ walk (or ride) through parkland from the stopping location.

One word of warning: This route travels directly west, has no cover from trees or buildings and, as they say in Holland, ‘the winds are our mountains’…
